Hello and thank you for following the start of my journey 'Down Under' and the upcoming races and plans I am embarking on.
On the 4th June 2016 I set myself the target of riding the Tour Of Cambridge Time Trial and those who were fastest would qualify for the world UCI amateur TT champs on the 1st September in Perth, Australia.
This was a massive incentive for me as I wanted to get through to the finals to not only compete in my first UCI world championships but to experience Australia and all it has to offer.
So the pressure was on to perform but I controlled the nerves and treated the race as another TT, I finished well and done the best I could on the day. soon after I finished I discovered I qualified and I was over the moon! I was fastest under 19 and 10th overall for the event.
So now the first hurdle is done the big one is yet to come and 3 months of hard specific training are to come.
Having this target has really focused me in my training and Ive been setting little goals along the way to break the journey down and take the pressure off. Its been a great progression and I now feel in the best shape I have been in a long time!
The last small target was 20th august and this was the National Derny Championships. I safely got through qualification winning my 15k heat. The final was 30k and an overall average speed of 61kph for 120 laps. Yes it was TOUGH!. although 10 laps in it got much harder for myself as my seatpost snapped causing it to slip and drop right down, I had to stop to try and sort it and done the best 'bog job' I could. but 5 laps after getting back in it broke again and with 100laps to go it was going to be an uncertain race. I fought through though and tried to make up the space I had lost and regain some laps on some of the competitors. I done the best I could with my Derny Driver Malcolm Freeman who was super all day long. we narrowly missed the medals and came home in 4th, which considering the mechanical is a great result.
Now with only 1 week to go until the big day I am feeling great and cant wait to check the course out which will be held just off the coast of fremantle on rottenest island. The course is 16miles long of rolling terrain and exposed sections to the sea winds.
After the championships I will be having some nice time off to travel Australia and to gather my thoughts for next year and new targets and limits to set myself.
I will keep you all updated, so for now. G'Day Mate ;)
